What Supplements Should I Take During Chemotherapy?

As a dietitian, a common question I receive from my clients undergoing chemotherapy is about supplements. It’s natural to want to support your body during treatment, but the answer is not always straightforward. Here’s what you need to know based on expert guidance and evidence-based resources.

The General Rule: Proceed with Caution

When it comes to supplements during chemotherapy, less is often more. It’s important to avoid high-dose antioxidants while on certain chemotherapy regimens, such as those involving alkylating agents like oxaliplatin. These antioxidants, while beneficial in other contexts, can potentially interfere with the effectiveness of chemotherapy by reducing oxidative stress—the very mechanism that some cancer treatments rely on to target cancer cells.

Reliable Resources for Research

For those who want to dig deeper into specific supplements or herbs, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s “About Herbs” platform is an excellent resource. Available as both a desktop tool and a mobile app, this resource provides evidence-based information tailored for both healthcare professionals and patients. It’s a tool I often recommend to my clients who want to educate themselves about the safety and efficacy of supplements during cancer treatment.

What About Probiotics?

Probiotics are another common area of interest, and for good reason. The gut microbiome plays a critical role in overall health. However, live probiotic supplements are not always advisable during chemotherapy, especially for patients with a central line, as they can increase the risk of infection. Additionally, yeast-based probiotics should be avoided entirely in these cases.

That said, prebiotics—non-digestible fibers that promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria—are generally considered safe and can be a good alternative for supporting gut health. If you’re considering probiotics, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare team to determine what’s safe and effective for your specific situation.

A Case-by-Case Approach

Every patient’s journey with cancer is unique, and so are their nutritional needs. While I don’t typically recommend supplements across the board, I’m happy to research specific ones if a patient asks. This individualised approach ensures that any recommendations align with your treatment plan and overall health goals.

Final Thoughts

While supplements can play a supportive role in some cases, they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution during chemotherapy. Always discuss any supplements you’re considering with your oncologist, pharmacist, or dietitian to ensure they’re safe and won’t interfere with your treatment. And remember, a nutrient-rich diet tailored to your needs can often provide the support your body needs during this challenging time.
