Weight Loss Surgery

There are many different weight loss surgeries available, however what they all have in common is that the surgery is only one part of the weight management journey.

The surgery alone is no guarantee for weight loss, but when it is combined with dietary and lifestyle change, it is a fantastic tool to facilitate weight loss.

The weight loss surgery journey can be broadly be divided in to three phases:

Phase 1:
Preparing for Surgery

After you have made the decision to have weight loss surgery, the preparation begins! A Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) will be our first task, guiding your body into a state of ketosis, where the body starts to 'burn' stored fat for fuel. Some of this fat is stored in the liver and around the stomach, so reducing this before surgery ensures the surgery is straightforward for the surgeon and safe for you.

Phase 2:
Recovering from Surgery

All types of weight loss surgery result in some swelling in the digestive track. You will begin with fluids, progress to a puree diet, followed by a soft diet, and then reintroduce normal textures. Your progression will be individualised to your surgery type and you will receive guidance every step of the way. How much should I be drinking? How do I achieve my protein target? Which multivitamin should I take? How much food should I be eating? What should my meal plan look like? And so on... All the support you need is waiting for you.

Phase 3:
Living with Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery is a fantastic tool to achieve remission for obesity as it helps you feel satisfied with smaller amounts of food. Keeping your focus on healthy eating and good nutrition after surgery will ensure that you achieve your weight loss goals and maintain these in the long-term. The balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats is important, and there are also better food choices within each group that are beneficial for your health. Micronutrient monitoring and supplementation is also essential as the amount and way you eat after weight loss surgery changes. With the right, long-term dietetic support you can stay healthy inside and out.
